California State University Bakersfield (also known as CSUB) is a comprehensive regional university committed to excellence. CSUB’s 8,000 students can major in 50 different Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees on it’s 375-acre suburban campus. The top three most popular academic programs are: Business/Marketing, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences. More than 75% of CSUB’s tenured/tenure-track faculty have doctoral degrees in their fields of study. The university operates on a quarter system from September to June and also has two summer sessions.
CSUB features a state-of-the-art student recreation center, over 85 student organizations and clubs, and 11 fraternities and sororities. CSUB Athletics has been a source of continuing pride for the university and community – it’s 17 sports programs have won 30 national championships and play at the NCAA Division I level.
Bakersfield is a city near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. It is roughly equidistant between Fresno and Los Angeles, which are 110 mi (180 km) to the north and south, respectively. In the 2010 census, the city’s population was 347,483, making it the 9th largest city in California and the 52nd largest city in the United States.
In mid to late September, Bakersfield holds the annual Kern County Fair, which showcases the area’s agricultural produce and animal husbandry, along with a rodeo, concerts, and a traditional carnival.Bakersfield hosts horse shows all year round, including local, 4H, and breed shows. Every spring, Bakersfield hosts one of California’s Scottish Games and Clan Gatherings. In the late summer, St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church hosts an annual Greek Festival. Every year during the summer, Bakersfield hosts the Lowrider National at the Kern County Fairgrounds. Memorial Day weekend features the Kern County Basque Festival, sponsored by the Kern County Basque Club, a three-day festival featuring food, music, dance, and handball games. In March, Famoso Raceway holds the annual March Meet nostalgia drag racing event. Twice a year, the CSUB Indigenous Native American Club hosts a Native Gathering on the California State University Bakersfield campus at Runner Park.
