The University of Paris VI, known as Pierre et Marie Curie, inherited most of the Sorbonne Faculty of Science and is located in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Today it is considered as the country leading scientific and medical University whose top line research and training programs are acknowledged worldwide.
Some facts: Research: 150 scientific laboratories. Publications: 15 000 in 4 years. Establishment chart: 2 700 teaching/ research staff; 1300 researchers; 3 400 engineers, administrative and technical agents; maintenance workers; 38 000 students (13 500 studying medicine, 24 500 studying science). Doctoral diplomas awarded annually; 600 doctorates of medicine, 1800 DEA (post MA research degree) or DESS (post MA vocational degree) i.e. 10% of all DEA defended in France, 150 engineering diplomas, 800 doctoral theses.
In the scientific sector, all the major fields are represented, both in teaching and in research: Pure and Applied Mathematics, Sciences of Calculus and Mathematical Engineering; Computer Sciences; Mechanics, Energetics and Robotics; Electronics, Electro-technics, Automation, Applications in Physics; Chemistry; Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Evolution of Natural Environments. In-house institutes include: Institute Henri Poincaré, Institute of Sciences and Technologies which offers engineering studies, the Oceanological Observatories at Roscoff, Banyuls and Villefranche-sur-Mer.
Medical Studies and research projects are grouped in 3 teaching hospitals, viz: Saint-Antoine, Pitié-Salpêtrière, Broussais Hôtel-Dieu and a UFR (Teaching Research Unit) of Maxillo-Facial Surgery. The Cordelier Biomedical Research Center also belongs to the group.
