About the University

San Francisco State University (commonly referred to as San Francisco StateSF State and SFSU) is a public research university located in San Francisco, California, United States. As part of the 23-campus California State University system, the university offers 118 different Bachelor’s degrees.

The university’s academic colleges are:

Nearly 300 clubs and organizations help students explore their interests and connect with others. SF State is an arts and culture center, with hundreds of workshops, guest lectures and exhibits held throughout the year. Events and exhibits feature the work of students and faculty members as well as professionals from outside the University community.

Health insurance is required of all full-time degree, resident, and international students with F1 and J1 visas.

As a J-1 exchange student, you are required to purchase the Relation Insurance Plan regardless of any other health insurance you may already have. Confirmation of enrollment may be sent to exchange@sfsu.edu

Living on-campus:

Limited on-campus housing is available to exchange students. Students interested in on-campus housing must submit their application directly to the university’s Housing Office by the specified deadline. Students may not apply for on-campus housing until they have been accepted into the exchange program and received their Student ID Number. Due to high demand, SF State cannot guarantee on-campus housing assignments. Students are, therefore, encouraged to apply early and be flexible when considering housing options. 

Cost: $11,190-$16,206 per year*
